HSBC is sponsoring a RMB10 million (US$1.25m) research project by Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management
The research project on the development of financial market and the role of commercial banks in China's rural areas will cover 12 rural provinces in mainland China.
HSBC Group Chairman Sir John Bond and HABP Chairman Vincent Cheng attended the agreement signing ceremony in Beijing in March 2006. Chen Zuoer, deputy-director of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, was also present at the ceremony.
In his speech at the ceremony, Sir John Bond said: At the National People's Congress that concluded earlier this week, the Chinese government put the development of the rural economy at the top of its agenda. So we are delighted to announce a project today whose goals support the governments aims to boost economic development in rural areas.
